According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, American Indian/Alaska Native adults are almost three times more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes. To help address these concerns, the San Diego American Indian Health Center (SDAIHC) has introduced two high-impact projects within its existing Special Diabetes Program for Indians. Kevin LaChapelle, CEO, San Diego American Indian Health Center and Veronica “Ronnie” Whitehorse, RN, for the San Diego American Indian Health Center, discuss these projects.

HRSA has recognized Health Center Program awardees that have achieved notable improvements in quality with their new Community Health Quality Recognition (CHQR) badges. The San Diego American Indian Health Center was the only FQHC to be recognized in San Diego County. Recognized health centers that tested more than 50% of their 2020 reported UDS patient populations from April 10, 2020 to July 2, 2021 and have a response rate of at least 50% to the weekly Health Center COVID-19 Survey were awarded the COVID-19 Testing recognition. We are grateful for our amazing team!

Among the Native American community, there are higher rates of diabetes, asthma, obesity and high blood pressure, said Young Suh, medical director at San Diego American Indian Health Center.
All of these conditions can increase the risk of someone having complications with coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
